Phase 4: Whole Body "Joints, Bones, and Muscles" Pt 1
Sara Sunstein
Oakland, CA
|
Over 3 consecutive Sundays, students will discover and explore a fresh way of addressing tensions and pain in the body. Derived from the strain-counter strain aspect of osteopathy, Ortho-Bionomy® is gentle for both the client and the one practicing it, so students learn ways to work smarter instead of harder, as well as how to meet/blend with someone without merging. The focus during the class is truly understanding the principles and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy® and how they underlie the techniques. To that end, the principles are pointed out throughout the class as students learn and practice techniques for each segment of the spine, pelvis, ribs, shoulders and limbs. By the end of the class, students can support ease and re-education in most parts of the body, whether that part was specifically taught in class or not. |

Phase 4 Extremities
Lynne Marotta
Stamford, CT
This foundation class covers the history, philosophy, and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy and provides an overview of the basic release techniques and anatomy for each major joint in the body. Movements and positions of comfort are demonstrated to facilitate the release of muscular tension and overall stress by stimulating the inherent, self-corrective reflexes of the body, which help create structural alignment and balance from within.
This course is typically taught for specific body areas/anatomy, such as spine, extremities, thoracics, etc. to break the coursework into more manageable sections.
This class focuses on Extremities Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, the founder of Ortho-Bionomy, organized his work into Phases Four, Five, Six and Seven, with the foundation work beginning with Phase Four. This is covered in the Phase Four course.

Phase 5 and the Reflexes
Luann Overmyer with Liz Olivas Co-Teaching
Boca Raton, FL
|
Phase 5 Ortho-Bionomy is about having a conversation with the tissue, not an argument. The focus of Phase Five is to move to a more subtle level of awareness of the practice and principle of Ortho-Bionomy®. Specific techniques develop and increase the student's understanding and proprioceptive sensitivity to the self-corrective movements initiated by the client. Through the practice of observing, following and supporting subtle movement patterns, muscular tension is released, range of motion may be increased and pain may be reduced. The gentle and subtle approach of this work is especially appropriate for releasing severe, acute pain and chronic patterning, This class presents practical, gentle release techniques can seem almost magical in their effectiveness. Releases for psoas, pelvis, lumbars, coccyx, neck, shoulders, clavicle, ears, eyes, jaw and more will be presented and practiced. Clarify your capacity to more clearly track mental, emotional and physical aspects Observe and work with tissue preferences in relationship to structural alignment Reinforce the body’s wisdom not the patient’s storylines Detect mood in the tissue Use internal state shifts to influence and interrupt habituated storylines and holding patterns. |

This class heightens our sensitivity and awareness to energetic relationship. The techniques clarify the effects of interactions within the auric field that promote a natural return to physical, mental and emotional well-being. Students learn to notice and identify energetic shifts within themselves and others, and to model that capacity. They learn the value of "not doing" as the practitioner steps back to allow the client's self-healing capacities to engage. The concepts of alignment and attunement, holding space, interrupting patterns, and offering options will be explored as they relate to the natural reflexive responses of rebound, recoil, remembered emotional response, follow on response, and ongoing action. |

Phase 6 is an Energetic Application of the Principles, Techniques, and Practices we have learned in Phase 4 and Phase 5 Ortho-Bionomy Classes. In Phase 6, we primarily work with the Etheric Body, Aura, Subtle Bodies or Energy Field of the client. Any of these terms can be used interchangeable, based on your background and exposure to what is commonly termed “Energy Work”. At times, we will have our hands on our client’s physical body, but most of the interface occurs off the body. |

September 2 (9:00AM PST) - 3 (1:00PM PST), 2026
Phase 7: Connection from a Distance Pt 1
Jim Berns
ONLINE
The dates of this class are September 2, 3, 9, 10, 9:00 am- 1:00 pm Pacific Time
Connection and healing can happen when we are near someone and also when we are far away. What does it take to create that connection and healing from a distance?
- In this experiential 16 hour class we will explore:
- Specific techniques to sensitize our body to feel more subtle energy.
- What do we feel in our body when we “tune in” to someone from far away?
- How can we soften and quiet ourselves to feel a shift or a response while connecting with someone from a distance?
- We will explore the inter-connectedness we all have with each other
For some, this class is the next step in their understanding of the “bigger picture” of Ortho-Bionomy. For others, it brings all that they have studied into a more concrete and clearer perspective.
This class is an elective for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International® Associate and Practitioner training programs and a requirement for the Advanced Practitioner training program. Prerequisite: One 16 hour Ortho-Bionomy Hands-on Class.

Isometrics and Isotonics (6)
January 23 - 24, 2026
Isometrics and Isotonics
Shaney Rockefeller
TBD, UT
|
Using Isometric and Isotonic resistance techniques encourages mobility and helps releases happen more readily in the body. By enlisting the participation of a client, these techniques can assist the self-correction of postural imbalances and chronic tension patterns. These techniques consist of slight restraint against a gently engaged muscle followed by the completion of the movement. As a practitioner, you can facilitate relaxing tense muscle patterns while encouraging toning of other muscles. In this class, participants learn how the use of gentle resistance exercises with the client can help promote change from rigid patterns in the muscles and joints to greater mobility. |

Isometric and Isotonics
Jim Berns
San Francisco, CA
|
Using the Ortho-Bionomy principles, Isometric and Isotonic techniques can add an element of strengthening within your therapeutic sessions through the additional tool of active movement. This additional approach can be invaluable for releasing “hard-to-reach” restrictions, without creating pain. Through the use of reciprocal inhibition, the muscle can be engaged, self-correcting reflexes can be stimulated, and habitual holding patterns can be released. These techniques can encourage clients to actively participate in their session and can easily become homework for self-care. Learn a fast and effective tool for your practice that is gentle for your clients and easy on your body. |

Exploration of Movement (5)
February 21 - 22, 2026
Exploration of Movement
Morel Stackhouse
Monona, WI - Zoom Option available
|
Exploration of Movement Patterns adds depth and dimension to Phase Four Ortho-Bionomy, moving it from technique to art. In this class you will learn to observe and explore various patterns of movement throughout the body in skin, fascia, muscle, connective tissue, bone, nerves, and fluid. We will use movement as both a means of assessment and as a release technique. Bodies are designed to move - releasing them through the application of movement deepens the connection between form and function, integrates the releases with the rest of the system, and gives the body a deeply-felt experience of itself. These techniques form an excellent bridge from the physical to the energetic work of Ortho-Bionomy. What others have said about this course: “This was simply a wonderful and amazing learning experience that opens up a whole new world of possibilities” “I’m glad I have another tool for treatment which is effective and effortless.” “I believe Morel has a great awareness and presence which takes it to a deep level quickly.”

Exploration of Movement
Melissa Malm
Olympia, WA
In this class we use hands-on movements to assess, to release, and to integrate areas of pain or tension in the client’s body. Using Ortho-Bionomy principles and the body’s innate wisdom, you will fine tune your ability to sense patterns in the movement of the tissue and the responses of the neuromuscular proprioceptive reflexes.
These hands-on movements fold in seamlessly with any kind of bodywork you are already doing, and are fun to do! These techniques are so important that Jim and Melissa use them in every single session.

Chapman's Reflexes for Organs and Glands
Sara Sunstein
Oakland, CA
By popular request, Sara’s offering this again so soon! We’ll be using Chapman’s Reflexes, identified by osteopath Frank Chapman in the 1920s, to stimulate nerve and lymph flow to individual organs and glands.
Working with the reflex points, we improve the body’s self-regulating abilities, overall functioning, and lymph flow. We can also group specific points together, to address different systems of the body, such as digestive, immune, reproductive, and more.

Demonstration Skills (1)
March 28 - 29, 2026
Demonstration Skills
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm
Ashland, OR
Every time you talk about Ortho-Bionomy, whether you are interacting with a client, someone you meet, or a friend, you are presenting yourself professionally and giving an “introductory talk.” Your feelings and excitement about Ortho-Bionomy come across in your words, energy, and body language.
To help you clearly and easily communicate about Ortho-Bionomy, this class will help you clarify:
~ What is Ortho-Bionomy?
~ What does an Ortho-Bionomy session look like?
~ How does Ortho-Bionomy feel?
~ What are the benefits of getting an Ortho-Bionomy session?
This Demonstration Skills Class will give you the confidence, knowledge, and experience to embody “being” Ortho-Bionomy, not just talking about it. Students will practice together in a safe, open, and supportive atmosphere. Whether you are a beginning student or finishing your practitioner program, this class can be an incredible experience!
This class is NCBTMB approved as a business/marketing class.
Pre-requisite: Enrolled in the Practitioner Training Program and have an Advisor. Completed the Associate Membership level or Advisor/Instructor recommendation.
This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Practitioner Training Program.

Anatomy and Physiology (11)
May 7, 2026
9:30AM - 1:30PM PST
Anatomy and Physiology 1 of 8
Melissa Malm
ONLINE
May 7, 21, June 4, 18, July 9, 23, August 6, 27 (Thursdays)
9am-1:30pm pacific, 10am-2:30pm mountain, 11am-3:30pm central, 12pm-4:30pm eastern
This class uses anatomy images, movement, and hands-on palpation to explore anatomical language and experience all the major bones and muscles of the human body in a way that is immediately and practically useful for bodywork practitioners.
I absolutely love studying the anatomy of the human body and can’t wait to share my passion for this with you!
Rather than rote memorization, emphasis will be placed on feeling the anatomy of our own body and our palpation partner, and on being comfortable with how to look up anatomical information in reference materials as needed.
This anatomy course is perfect for students starting out in their bodywork training, for laypeople who want to know more about the anatomy of the human body as they work with friends and family, or for students at any level who would like to review and renew their anatomy knowledge.
This 32-hour online course will be presented in eight 4 hour “bite-sized” classes, with a half hour break about halfway through the day. For more thorough kinesthetic understanding of the material presented, you will need a palpation partner most days of class.*
You will have the opportunity to spend some time outside class coloring images and doing other explorations that facilitate your learning process. The 2-3 week interval between each class will allow time for you to practice anatomical palpation with friends and family and for the information to integrate into your system between classes.
If you have any questions about the contents of this course or wish to discuss the requirements and how they relate to your specific situation, please text 415.595.0328 so we can set up a time to talk further about how this course can meet your needs.
This course fulfills SOBI’s 32-hour anatomy requirement for the Practitioner Training Program.
*Contact me for more information about palpation partner requirements. The partner does not have to be the same person for each class.

Cranial
Jessica Mark
Fruitland, ID
Arthur Lincoln Pauls developed a gentle and profoundly effective way of addressing structural imbalances in the cranium. In this class, you’ll learn to feel both your clients’ and your own cranial structures in a truly three-dimensional way.
Through a series of Ortho-Bionomy cranial holds and the three dimensions of the cranium as a whole, you’ll explore how to support the cranium in finding its own self-correction—allowing natural motion, balance, and ease to reemerge.
Because cranial patterns affect the entire system, we’ll also focus on integrating these changes throughout the whole body. You’ll learn how to connect cranial work with the pelvis, heart, and extremities so that shifts are fully supported, grounded, and sustainable.
This class is designed to deepen your perceptual sensitivity, expand your structural understanding, and strengthen your ability to facilitate whole-body balance through the cranium.

This class presents an Ortho-Bionomy approach to restoring the functional movements of the abdomen and the organs of digestion. We will look at the viscera as a community within itself and explore how its movements extend out into the surrounding areas. In this 3-day class, we will explore the mouth, throat, esophagus, sphincters, liver, gallbladder, stomach, intestines and more.
We will learn to palpate and sense the organs themselves and how they relate to each other. We will also work with the bony structures and soft tissues that support them.
When I first took this visceral class in 2007. I remember my instructor Darlene Smith saying, “If the body is not changing, we need to look at the viscera.”
I spent six years assisting her as we discovered the potential of the body to heal and how the viscera played an important role.
Did you know the liver can cause right shoulder, neck and breathing issues?
Did you know the mesentery root can cause issues with the right sacroiliac joint and prolapse of the uterus and bladder?
Did you know the large intestine can cause hip & low back pain, and sciatica?
These are just a few examples of how the viscera can affect the structure of the body. The viscera can also affect each other causing poor digestion, nutrient absorption and removal of toxic substances and wastes.
Come join us and learn how the viscera play a vital role in our health and well-being.

Ortho-Bionomy Releases for the Breath
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm Co-Teaching
Corvalis, OR
Breath is life. Each breath we take is a picture of who we have been, who we are, and who we yearn to be. Using osteopathic-based principles of Ortho-Bionomy, in this hands-on training we will:
· Recognize restrictions of the breath and offer it new options
· Bring awareness to the connections between the breath and other parts of the body
· Explore the possibilities of where the breath can lead us
· Use painless comfortable positions to release tension patterns in the structure associated with the breath.
It is amazing how such gentle techniques can give such deep releases. Ortho-Bionomy is easy on the practitioner and can easily be integrated into any massage or bodywork session. Ortho-Bionomy uses gentle painless positions and movements to allow the body to self-correct back to balance and ease. It is easy on the practitioner to do and comforting for the client to receive.
This class is NCBTMB approved, course# 70334152 (Jim Berns) This class can fulfill an elective requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Associate, Practitioner, and Advanced Practitioner training programs.

In this class we will work with areas of the body that relate to this anterior line of fascia allowing the body to self-correct bringing tone and balance. We will also look at how this effects the posterior side of the body.

Beyond Technique
Luann Overmyer
Bend, OR
The practice of Ortho-Bionomy is so much more than the application of technique. As a sensing organism we all are processing a profound amount of information moment to moment.
This class is an invitation to explore and clarify how we use our experience, skills, intuition and our own felt sense to more wholistically assess our clients.
How do we weave an interconnectedness within the session and in on-going sessions?
How do we experience and enhance our intuitive process for guidance and clarity?
How do we track the client's progress?
What larger paradigms do we use as metaphors for our work with people that clarify and define our larger scope of practice?
Come prepared to share, learn and explore.

Ortho-Bionomy Releases for the Breath
Jim Berns
San Francisco, CA
Breath is life. Each breath we take is a picture of who we have been, who we are, and who we yearn to be. Using osteopathic-based principles of Ortho-Bionomy, in this hands-on training we will: ·
- Recognize restrictions of the breath and offer it new options
- Bring awareness to the connections between the breath and other parts of the body
- Explore the possibilities of where the breath can lead us
- Use painless comfortable positions to release tension patterns in the structure associated with the breath
It is amazing how such gentle techniques can give such deep releases. Ortho-Bionomy is easy on the practitioner and can easily be integrated into any massage or bodywork session.

This class is NCBTMB approved and counts towards most states’ Ethics requirements. This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International® Associate and Practitioner training programs.

Residential (5)
May 10 - 16, 2026
Residential
Luann Overmyer
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia
Our aim with this Residential experience is to provide an opportunity for participants to immerse in Ortho-Bionomy learning and practice, and experience personal growth in their own unique way.
The Hervey Bay area, and its surrounds, provide a lovely part of the world for this experience. Imagine yourself there by the sea, sharing and learning with members of the Australian Ortho-Bionomy community.
Residential training programs provide participants with the opportunity to broaden and deepen their understanding of Ortho-Bionomy techniques and principles through an in-depth immersion for five or more days of uninterrupted study. Residentials allow time for learning and personal growth as well as relaxation to facilitate the integration of technique, philosophy and the qualities of "being" rather than “doing".
