Phase 4 Extremities
Cynthia Wood
Waldoboro, ME
This foundation class covers the history, philosophy, and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy and provides an overview of the basic release techniques and anatomy for each major joint in the body. Movements and positions of comfort are demonstrated to facilitate the release of muscular tension and overall stress by stimulating the inherent, self-corrective reflexes of the body, which help create structural alignment and balance from within. This course is typically taught for specific body areas/anatomy, such as spine, extremities, thoracics, etc. to break the coursework into more manageable sections.
Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, the founder of Ortho-Bionomy, organized his work into Phases Four, Five, Six and Seven, with the foundation work beginning with Phase Four. This is covered in the Phase Four course.

Phase 4: Extremities
Sara Sunstein
Olympia, WA
This class focuses on the limbs—including their connections with the torso—as well as the history, philosophy and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy® that underlie the techniques.
While we attend to joints, we’re also addressing the bones, muscle, connective tissue, fluids, and nerves that pass through the joints. Overall, you’ll be learning a compassionate, affirming, and healing way to connect with another (and yourself).
By the end of the seminar, you will be able to put your new skills into practical use: helping others, doing self-care, and adding to your massage or bodywork tool kit.

Phase 5 (3)
November 16 - 17, 2024
Phase 5: Subtle Perceptions, Connections, and Healing
Sara Sunstein
Oakland, CA
In Phase 5, we’re developing conscious awareness of subtle movements and flow that the body is already doing as part of its existence. Once we’re tuned in, how do we interact with that movement–and the whole body–to support healing?
Often this level of work elicits client comments like, “This is magic!” Well, yes, the body’s healing and resiliency is magic. Learning how to tap into it, however, is a skill that can be learned.
“This class can be taken as a single class or can be combined with any or all of the week long series of classes we are calling Spine, Mind, and Motion.”

Phase 5: The Art of Connection
Sheri Covey
Denver, CO
Phase Five moves to a more subtle level of awareness of the practice and principles of Ortho-Bionomy®. Phase Five techniques develop and increase the student's understanding and proprioceptive sensitivity to the self-corrective movements initiated by the client.
Through observation, following and supporting subtle movement patterns, muscular tension is released, range of motion is increased and pain is reduced.
In Phase Five, students are encouraged to do less and let the client be the guide for his/her exploration of change.

Phase 6
Luann Overmyer
Gainesville, FL
This class heightens our sensitivity and awareness to energetic relationship. The techniques clarify the effects of interactions within the auric field that promote a natural return to physical, mental and emotional well-being. Students learn to notice and identify energetic shifts within themselves and others, and to model that capacity. They learn the value of "not doing" as the practitioner steps back to allow the client's self-healing capacities to engage.
The concepts of alignment and attunement, holding space, interrupting patterns, and offering options will be explored as they relate to the natural reflexive responses of rebound, recoil, remembered emotional response, follow on response, and ongoing action. This class presents release techniques that monitor and acknowledge the capacity of the person to energetically shift their patterns to promote physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Participants develop sensitivity and learn to recognize and observe the emotional and energetic shifts that occur as a result of the Ortho-Bionomy movements that are experienced. Participants learn the value of "not doing" as the practitioner steps back and allow the client's self-healing capacities to engage.

Exploration of Movement
Melissa Malm
Corvalis, OR
In this class we use hands-on movements to assess, to release, and to integrate areas of pain or tension in the client’s body. Using Ortho-Bionomy principles and the body’s innate wisdom, you will fine tune your ability to sense patterns in the movement of the tissue and the responses of the neuromuscular proprioceptive reflexes.
These hands-on movements fold in seamlessly with any kind of bodywork you are already doing, and are fun to do! These techniques are so important that Melissa uses them in every single session.

Posture and Post Techniques (2)
November 9 - 10, 2024
Posture and Post Techniques
Shaney Rockefeller
Seattle, WA
Posture and Post Techniques class teaches you techniques that can be used for assessment, release, and integration of Ortho-Bionomy work. Post Techniques are designed to directly relate to the Ortho-Bionomy Phase 4 spine work. Using these techniques can help your Ortho-Bionomy work settle in the body better as well as help you and the body recognize what is still “stuck”. There are aspects of the class that are also great to send home as “self help” to continue to body’s work at releasing long held patterns and making changes toward more functionality. Participants learn to evaluate and address inefficient postural habits through focused observation and simple exercises. This includes working with gait, scoliosis, and the natural curves of the spine. |

Isometrics and Isotonics (8)
November 4 - 5, 2024
Isometric and Isotonics: Pain-free Reciprocal Inhibition Release Techniques
Jim Berns
Davis, CA
Using the Ortho-Bionomy principles, Isometric and Isotonic techniques can add an element of strengthening within your therapeutic sessions through the additional tool of active movement.
This additional approach can be invaluable for releasing “hard-to-reach” restrictions, without creating pain. Through the use of reciprocal inhibition, the muscle can be engaged, self-correcting reflexes can be stimulated, and habitual holding patterns can be released. These techniques can encourage clients to actively participate in their session and can easily become homework for self-care.
Learn a fast and effective tool for your practice that is gentle for your clients and easy on your body. There are no prerequisites for this class, and we will cover the essentials of the Phase 4 positional release procedure.

Isometric and Isotonics
Erin Long
Jonesboro, AR
Isometric and isotonic techniques offer the opportunity to work with inefficient muscular tension patterns, tone muscle tissue that has become flaccid, and smooth out any bumps or jittery grabs within the muscle spindles.
By restraining movement or toning through movement while a muscle is engaged, we stimulate the nervous system and reciprocal inhibition, cue the self-correcting reflexes into action, and greater balance between opposing muscles or muscle groups is encouraged.
The process is remarkably quick, 8-10 seconds, and offers us a powerful tool to open stuck or contracted areas that do not respond to other techniques.
The client is an active participant in this process, bringing self-awareness and recognition of the work. In this class isometric and isotonic exercises will be taught and practiced offering relief from chronic pain, rigid muscle patterns, postural imbalances, and more.

The class format includes time to discuss questions or problems that arise during a session, an opportunity to receive feedback and supervision about difficult cases, and information on how to best structure a session, set fees, and communicate with clients.

Practitioner Training Seminar--Part 1 of 4
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm
Online
The Practitioner Training Seminar is grounded in the nuts and bolts of a session (e.g. the intake/interview process, where to work next, clearing your own tension, efficiently closing a session), while also working with the less tangible aspects of being a bodywork practitioner (e.g. preparing yourself for a session, clearing energy (“Ortho-Bionomy Feng Shui.”)
Through self-awareness, enhanced by both discussion and exercises, the student is given a chance to expand into a more authentic practitioner, build their confidence, and ask clarifying questions related to developing their practice or pursuing their studies.
While this class is designed to be part of the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International Practitioner Training Program, it can greatly benefit anyone who is looking to deepen their connection to their practice.
The dates of this class are: May 21, 22, 28, 29 from 9:00am - 1:00pm Pacific
This class is NCBTMB approved as a business/marketing class. This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Practitioner Training Program.

Anatomy & Physiology: Visual & Kinesthetic Approach to Anatomy for Bodyworkers--Part 1 of 8
Melissa Malm
ONLINE
Saturdays Jan 4, 18, Feb 8, Mar 1, 22, Apr 5, 19, May 10, 2025 9:30-2:00 Pacific, 10:30-3:00 Mountain, 11:30-4:00 Central, 12:30-5:00 Eastern
This class uses anatomy images, movement, and hands-on palpation to explore anatomical language, circulatory systems, and all the major bones and muscles of the human body in a way that is immediately and practically useful for bodywork practitioners.
This class uses anatomy images, movement, and hands-on palpation to explore anatomical language, present an overview of the sympathetic/parasympathetic/enteric/proprioceptive aspects of the nervous system plus endangerment sites for circulatory/nerve/lymphatic pathways, and experience all the major bones and muscles of the human body in a way that is immediately and practically useful for bodywork practitioners.
I absolutely love studying the anatomy of the human body and can’t wait to share my passion for this with you! Along with looking at anatomical representations in class, you will also spend a small amount of time outside class coloring images and creating an easy artistic representation of an anatomical area that interests you, to share the last class.
For more thorough kinesthetic understanding of the material presented, you will need a palpation partner most days of class.
* Rather than rote memorization, emphasis will be placed on feeling the anatomy of our own body and our palpation partner, and on being comfortable with how to look up anatomical information in reference materials as needed.
This anatomy course is perfect for students starting out in their bodywork training, for laypeople who want to know more about the anatomy of the human body as they work with friends and family, or for students at any level who would like to review and renew their anatomy knowledge.
This 32-hour online course will be presented in eight 4 hour “bite-sized” classes, with a half hour break about halfway through the day. The 2-3 week interval between each class will allow time for easy visual/kinesthetic homework, for you to practice anatomical palpation with friends and family, and for the information to integrate into your system between classes.
If you have any questions about the contents of this course or wish to discuss the requirements and how they relate to your specific situation, please text 415.595.0328 so we can set up a time to talk further about how this course can meet your needs.
This course is NCBTMB approval pending and fulfills SOBI’s 32-hour anatomy requirement for the Practitioner Training Program.
*Palpation partner required all of classes 2 & 3, the second half of class 4, all of classes 5-7, and none of classes 1 or 8. The partner does not have to be the same person for each class.
Recommended textbooks—We will be looking at images from multiple sources during class, and my goal is for you to discover which one(s) you feel most comfortable using.
Please plan to purchase one or more of the following anatomy reference books before the last day of class: The Anatomy Coloring Book by Wynn Kapit & Lawrence M Elson Trail Guide to the Body by Andrew Biel Atlas of Human Anatomy by Frank H Netter Job’s Body: A Handbook for Bodywork by Deane Juhan Trail Guide to the Body and Netter also have companion coloring books/workbooks
There are also wonderful anatomy apps that help with an interactive 3D view.

Anatomy & Physiology: Visual & Kinesthetic Approach to Anatomy for Bodyworkers--Part 4 of 8
Melissa Malm

Anatomy and Physiology: Part 9 of 11 - Movements Towards Disease and Health
Barry Krost
ONLINE
In this online course, anatomical and physiological structures and functions relevant to the practice of Ortho-Bionomy are presented from a bodywork perspective. We will look at the main systems of the body from holistically.
Our textbook will be Job’s Body by Deane Juhan (Third Edition), the most widely used resources in therapeutic bodywork. In this book Juhan explores the skin, connective tissue, bone, muscles, nerve and fascia, the impact of touch, evolutionary impacts, the brain, proprioception, and recent developments that challenge and expand on our understanding of the body, mind and spirit. It includes insights from biochemistry, cell biology, energy medicine, neurophysiology and quantum consciousness.
This course will be 11 three-hour sessions every three weeks on a Wednesday. There will be required reading and homework for each time we meet. The class will include reading guides for Job’s Body, additional readings and videos that enhance the topics.

Surgical Trauma and Scar Tissue Release
Morel Stackhouse and Lynne Marotta
Norwalk/Stamford, CT
My work with scar tissue has been developing since the mid 1990’s. It is a synthesis of Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing (aka The Biological Model of Trauma), Ortho-Bionomy, and Zapchen Somatic Therapies. It involves light touch with a lot of energetic interaction. Through this way of working the scar tissue becomes integrated with the rest of the body and is no longer a foreign object. The scar tissue and adhesions shift and become supple and behave more like normal tissue. People tell me that post scar work the scar no longer feels like a foreign object but part of them - it becomes integrated with the rest of their body, moves like part of the skin, etc.
The collagen of scar tissue is undifferentiated, and in a Somatic sense it doesn't understand its function beyond that of "glue" or "cement". My scar work helps the scar tissue take on the structure and characteristics of the tissue it replaces. In the case of adhesions, I don't tear or damage them, but through this way of working they become loose and supple and capable of stretching. The adhesions don't go away, but they no longer create the problems that stiff, non-supple tissue does. I find that if you go after scar tissue or adhesions aggressively and damage them, the body just seeks to make more "glue" and lays down more collagen, making the problems worse.
The foundation to all of this scar work is my awareness of what happens neurologically with a body that has experienced a trauma (even though we welcome these life-saving surgeries, the reptilian brain experiences them as a threat). Throughout the work I am aware of this and work appropriately to allow the autonomic nervous system to return to the resting state. -Morel Stackhouse
In this one-day class we will learn to work with various types of scar tissue, adhesions, broken bones, implanted hardware and prosthesis. Ways to support clients before, during and after surgery will be discussed. This class is not appropriate for zoom participation.

Fluids, Fascia and the Lymphatic System
Liz Olivas
Indianapolis, IN
In this class you will learn how Ortho-Bionomy® can facilitate the natural ability of the lymphatic system to function well.
The focus will be on understanding the nature of the lymphatic system and its relationship to the fascia and the fluids. The class will include discussion in the following areas: Basic anatomy physiology and microcirculation of the lymphatic system. Relationships between the parts; fluids fascia and the lymphatic System.
Ortho-Bionomy® techniques presented will release structural binding and blocking of the lymphatic system and encourage natural fluid flow.
Scar tissue refinement Specific techniques to address Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome This method will gently reduce general pain, refine post surgical scar tissue, and promote edema reduction. It is also an effective adjunct to Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy in the treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema.
Ortho-Bionomy® promotes working with ease and comfort for the client as well as the practitioner.

Cranial: Skin, Muscle, Bone
Jim Berns
Ashland, OR
In this class we will be working with the structure and skin-muscle-bone (Phase 4), unwinding (Phase 5), and the energetics of the cranium (Phase 6).
We will explore how the dynamic of relaxing the practitioner can deeply release the client. With the influence of the different nerves, blood, meridians, and brain stimulations going through the neck, head, and face, the effects of this work can be quite powerful. It can give the saying “get your head together” a whole other meaning.
This may be different from any other cranial class you have taken. The skills and sensitivity gained from this class can be used with any modality throughout the whole body.
This class is NCBTMB approved. This class can fulfill an elective requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Associate or Practitioner training programs, and is required for the Advanced Practitioner training program.

Equine Fascia Network Anatomy Part Il (Online)
Susan Smith
ONLINE
In this 5-part online course we pick up where we left off in Equine Fascia Network Anatomy Part I - and review superficial lines as well as those that interact with the additional lines that may include spirals, lateral movement and front limb lines.
Part II continues to take an Ortho-Bionomy approach to working with the fascia by fostering self-awareness and deeper understanding in the equine body and which way the body tissue wants to move. While fascia does indeed envelop almost every part of the body with its binding, strengthening, connecting and separating web, it also can hold pain or be worked with to relieve pain.
In working with the fascial network either directly or simply increasing our awareness of it through Equine Ortho-Bionomy, we can bring greater functionality to the body system. This course will cover our current understanding of fascia, the fascial webbing that follows the grain of the body's connective tissue fabric, which forms traceable "meridians" of myofascia. When muscles contract inside this webbing they transmit a force toward resilient stability or toward chronic tension.
Beyond origin and insertion which is a popular way of viewing muscles, most muscles have a number of very relevant soft-tissue attachments. In this class, we will work with fascia that enables: Rotation of the spine Lateral movement Spinal flexion and extension Adduction and Abduction Connection to common structures We will look at fascial relationships and how to work with them through Equine Ortho-Bionomy.
For those who wish to take both parts, they can take $50 of the total for both courses. Please contact the instructor about this.

Anatomy & Physiology: Visual & Kinesthetic Approach to Anatomy for Bodyworkers Part 1 0f 8

Anatomy & Physiology: Visual & Kinesthetic Approach to Anatomy for Bodyworkers Part 4 of 8
Melissa Malm

Practitioner Training Seminar Part 1 of 4
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm
The dates of this class are: May 21, 22, 28, 29 from 9:00am - 1:00pm Pacific Time This class is NCBTMB approved as a business/marketing class. This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Practitioner Training Program.

Practitioner Training Seminar Part 2 of 4
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm
The dates of this class are: May 21, 22, 28, 29 from 9:00am - 1:00pm Pacific Time This class is NCBTMB approved as a business/marketing class. This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Practitioner Training Program.
